After many months of discussion FDA Issues Dietary Supplements Final Rule has been issued (Friday 22 June 2007). This tightens the loop hole used by some lower quality manufacturers. Raising the quality bar to a minimally acceptable level without undue cost is strongly supported. For 80% of manufacturers this has no ramification as they already follow cGMP. Read more about it here:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a final rule establishing regulations to require current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) for dietary supplements. The rule ensures that dietary supplements are produced in a quality manner, do not contain contaminants or impurities, and are accurately labeled.

"This rule helps to ensure the quality of dietary supplements so that consumers can be confident that the products they purchase contain what is on the label," said Commissioner of Food and Drugs Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D. "In addition, as a result of recent amendments to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, by the end of the year, industry will be required to report all serious dietary supplement related adverse events to FDA."

The regulations establish the cGMP needed to ensure quality throughout the manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and storing of dietary supplements. The final rule includes requirements for establishing quality control procedures, designing and constructing manufacturing plants, and testing ingredients and the finished product. It also includes requirements for recordkeeping and handling consumer product complaints.

David Seckman, executive director and CEO of the Natural Products Association said:

We’ve waited nearly 13 years for this important regulation and are anxious to thoroughly review it and let members know exactly what it will mean to them…. With recent concerns raised about the safety of food ingredients, implementation of this regulation will help to bolster consumer confidence and keep standards high throughout the industry.

MyHealthMyWorld and all at Natural Health Formula Co-op agree.

Our coop is continuing to expand, and we are very pleased to be able to announce an additional site that focuses upon hard to find natural wholefoods and other natural products. For sometime we had want to be able provide a wider range of specialized foods and herbal ingredients. To do this, we have launched www.NatureCoop.com, a website that is dedicated to mainly organic and natural food and supplements.

We will continue to provide the same vast range of quality brand products at MyHealthMyWorld.com. However, we felt that it would be better to create a new site identity rather than expect you to try and navigate through the same single site.

If you like www.MyHealthMyWorld.com, we hope you will love www.NatureCoop.com.

This has been one of our most frequent questions from you, our members. It seems that many on-line stores often fail to deliver. We have found that one of the best ways to ensure customer absolute satisfaction is only ever list current inventory that is verified to be in stock - TODAY!

Therefore - we have introduced a new feature "Check Inventory?"!!!!! Maybe marketing should get out more often and have come up with a better name? But we do think that this will be a welcomed option. The Current inventory will appears on every product page. Click on the "Check Inventory?" and yes!- as you might expect you get exactly what we have in stock. In addition - you can always email us for orders that exceed our stock.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

We dynamically update inventory every 24 hours so what you see is a very good indication of what is available. The inventory level even counts down based on order commitment within MyHealthMyWorld.com. However - we do sell through other chanels - so there is always the slight chance that stock might have already been sold. We are not yet perfect - but this WILL be a big benefit to you our customers. - We hope!

We have had some great compliments recently about elements of our site design. Thanks for all the feedback and we welcome your thoughts.

Please let us know both the bad and the good. For example, the other day a customer emailed to let me know of an ordering issue that they were having - our web person did not know about the issue and was able to sort it out both for the one customer and everyone else.

One item I thought you might be interested in is did you know that you can play with the falling icons (normally leafs) on the home page http://www.myhealthmyworld.com/. Just click on the logo at the top of the page and use your mouse to adjust how the falling icons behave. You can try it here:

At our Coop, our thoughts and opinions on what packaging to use are very mixed. Where possible we try to use only recyclable materials. We try to reuse materials when reasonable, and we try to ship from the nearest of our two warehouse (when we have the item at both locations).

However, the challenge is that many of the products that we ship contain glass bottles. A broken glass bottle is obviously something we try to avoid. For small bottles, we find paper and corregated cardboard work. However, for any larger bottles and orders, we often take the precaution of using bubble wrap.

If you have an opinion about our packaging - please email us at custserv@myhealthmyworld.com.

And Thanks!

A friend sent me this. I thought it was of broader interest…

Individuals who get higher levels of the folic acid through both diet and supplements may have a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to a report in the January issue of Archives of Neurology. Researchers interviewed and assessed the diets of 965 individuals without dementia between 1992 and 1994 and then followed them for an average of 6.1 years to see if they developed Alzheimer’s disease. During the follow-up period, 192 of the participants developed Alzheimer’s disease.

When the individuals were divided into four groups based on the total level of folate they took in through food and supplements and the analysis was adjusted for patient characteristics, comorbid diseases and B12 and B6 intake, the risk of Alzheimer’s disease was lower in the groups with higher intake. Neither dietary folate nor supplements alone were significantly linked to Alzheimer’s disease risk; only the two in combination appeared to produce an effect. Researchers suspect that elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood, which is linked to a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke, may also increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Natural Products Association Supports Law, Says New Requirements Will Illustrate Exemplary Safety Record of Supplements

President Bush today signed into law the Dietary Supplement and Non-Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act (the “AER bill”), S. 3546. The bill was overwhelmingly supported by dietary supplement retailers and suppliers who welcomed its passage as further proof that the industry is well-regulated and committed to consumer safety.

“Our top priority is providing the products that people want to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives,” said David Taylor, president of the Natural Products Association. The bill includes several provisions that were key to earning the Natural Products Association’s support.

Be limited to serious adverse events and not require reporting of just any complaint
The Natural Products Association believes that adverse events potentially related to dietary supplements will be minimal and serious adverse events rarer still. Having a reliable and verifiable system that attests to the safety of dietary supplements will end negative speculation by critics of the dietary supplement industry.

Not require retailers to report adverse events from customers to the FDA
Adverse event reports should come from the company that manufactured, packaged or distributed the product, not the retailer.

Include OTC drugs
If dietary supplements and prescription drugs have an adverse event reporting framework, it only makes sense that OTC drugs should, as well.

Include a state preemption provision
In the absence of a federal bill, several states have introduced legislation mandating various reporting requirements for dietary supplement adverse events.

Be limited to products sold in the U.S.
Requiring manufacturers to report adverse events from products used overseas is neither practical nor reasonable.

“This law is further proof that the dietary supplement industry is well-regulated and puts consumers first.”

Look for more information about implementation of this bill in upcoming issues of Natural Products Association Now and on the Natural Products Association Web site at www.naturalproductsassoc.org/AERs.
